What Is Peritoneal Mesothelioma?

Posted in Health on October 5th, 2009 by Heidi Wingrain – Be the first to comment

Peritoneal Mesothelioma affects the lining of abdominal cavity and accounts to about one-fifth of all reported cases of mesothelioma cancer. It is more common in men than women and mostly caused by exposure to asbestos. The symptoms start showing only after twenty to thirty years after such exposure and can assume life-threatening proportions if not treated immediately. Effective diagnosis of the disease can be made by a tissue biopsy, but other methods like CT scan may yield confusing results.

In some patients a normal check up regarding problems like gall bladder, pelvic mass, hernia etc. will reveal peritoneal mesothelioma. In a few cases the patients may have an uncomfortable feeling before the actual symptoms begin to appear. Pain in abdomen, collection of fluid in abdomen, formation of lumps, fatigue, fever, improper functioning of digestive system, weight loss for no apparent reason, anemia etc are the clinical symptoms of the cancer.

It is possible to identify the various stages of this cancer in the lymph nodes, tumor and metastases system (TNM), used to determine general cancers. Localized abrasions are visible in the first level and they can be removed easily. Strong therapies are used in the second stage to cure the disease which affects the abdominal cavity on peritoneal and organ surfaces. The infection stays within the abdominal cavity in the third stage, but spreads inside important organs like liver and colon. In the fourth stage, it spreads to the adjacent areas from the abdominal cavity.

How To Fall Asleep Sooner

Posted in Health on October 3rd, 2009 by Trevor Johnson – Be the first to comment

If you find that when you go to bed, you just lie awake, you are not alone with this problem. Here is some help on how to fall asleep sooner.

For some, this problem occurs sometimes, but not all the time. Try to identify what is going around in your mind when this happens. There are many things that this could be – problems at work or with the kids, an important meeting or even an exciting event.

When you have something going around and around in your mind, it will always be difficult getting to sleep. You need to clear your mind; keep a notebook and pen beside the bed, and write down what is on your mind before you turn out the light. Just this simple act of making notes, gets it out of your mind and helps you fall asleep. A wonderful bonus of using this strategy is that you often wake up with the solution in your mind!

However, many people have difficulty falling asleep most nights. To stop this vicious cycle of going to bed, worrying about not getting to sleep and lying awake, you need to change your evening routine. Make a list of the things you do in the evening; repeat this every day for a week and look for things that are common to every evening. Consider whether these may be affecting your sleep patterns.

Bronchial Asthma Treatment: Ipratropium

Posted in Health on October 2nd, 2009 by Jamie Sue Tan – Be the first to comment

Asthma is a long-term, sometimes life-long illness, where the symptoms include wheezing, coughing, and difficulty in breathing. Asthma due to the narrowing of the bronchi is called bronchial asthma so as to distinguish it from cardiac asthma which is due to fluid accumulation and is more likely a symptom of an underlying heart disease. Bronchodilators are designed to deal with this bronchoconstriction.

Asthma is known for its recent increase in prevalence. It occurs in mostly urban children in early years. Sometimes, asthma symptoms disappear when a child reaches a certain age. However, the asthma can resurface when theyre older; typically reappearing for those in their late 30s to 50s. This can be attributed to the toxic environment. In the same environment, non-asthmatics may develop asthma.

A non-asthmatic naturally does not carry inhalers with them. They dont really need it. But in the event of a mild or acute asthma attack, especially one that happens for the first time, they still need bronchodilators. Bronchodilators commonly come in the form of albuterol, or salbutamol. But another inhaled bronchodilator was designed to relieve acute or new asthma symptoms.
