How to Make a Torchlight When Camping

Posted in Sports on February 9th, 2011 by Drew Lannom – Be the first to comment

Camping can be great fun and it can offer you the chance to do projects that let you reap instant benefit. If you are looking for a great project for the whole family, making your own torchlights can be a great option. To do this, all you need to have is some sections of 3 ft. PVC pipe, a long strand of wick, some torch oil, a clean and empty soup can, and a clean and empty tuna fish can, as well as a bag to bring home the soot covered materials after the trip is over.

With all of your materials gathered, you will want to start by using a screwdriver to punch a hole in the bottom of the tuna fish can. If you have children who will be making their own torches, it is highly recommended that you complete this step for them before allowing them to take on the project so that you can decrease the chances that they will be injured. The remainder of the project should be safe for children as long as they are well supervised and an adult is in charge of actually lighting the torches upon completion.

Start by threading your strand of wick through the hole in the tuna fish can. When this is done, securely fasten the soup can, in the upright position, to the piece of PVC pipe. This will create the body of the torch, and when it is securely attached, bury the bottom of the pipe in an area free of leaves and other flammable debris as well as away from tents and sleeping bags. Now fill the soup can with torch fluid and put the tuna can on top of it in the upside down position with the wick soaking in the fluid.

Stay Organized With A Camping Checklist

Posted in Sports on December 13th, 2010 by David East – Be the first to comment

There are some individuals who imagine that anybody who makes a camping checklist is just too organized. However it’s the person who dismisses the idea of making a checklist who is most likely to overlook an article that is vital to their trip. For instance, if you bring a lot of canned food with you on your trip, yet forget to bring a can opener, you will soon be especially hungry. And when you are camping in a remote area, then you clearly have a big problem. A camping checklist helps you to escape this type of difficulty so that your vacation won’t be ruined.

When you are deciding what things to put on your camping checklist you must think about what type of trip you are going on. An RV camping checklist could not be the same as one you would prepare if you were staying in a tent, since you will need to bring different equipment.

Much depends on where you’re going as well. Your checklist must include more things and be especially meticulous when your destination is far away from civilization somewhere in the backwoods. But when your destination is a rural area only a few miles from a community you will likely be able to get any forgotten things throughout your journey.

Essential Camping Gear You Can Not Do Without

Posted in Sports on June 24th, 2010 by Tiffany Ellis – Be the first to comment

Some camping trips can definitely be more fun than others. Getting where you are going and not having everything you really need can be a big bummer. The one sure way to make sure you take everything necessary is to make a check list right from the start. As important as the tent you take along is, there are other things you must have just as much.

You could end up in serious trouble if you forget to put a first aid kit at the top of your check list. You never set out on a camping trip expecting to get hurt or sick, but it happens a lot more often than people are prepared for. A lantern is a necessity because in the night you might not be able to see well enough with just a flashlight or a fire. If there is a snake or spiders lurking around, you certainly want to be able to see those easily.

Chairs are usually brought along for comfort, but they are actually a much safer and more comfortable choice than sitting on the ground. They will help keep the insect from getting you so easily. You always need a grill and perhaps a rotisserie for over the fire. Many campers prefer camp cooking this way, but it is still a good idea to bring along a camping stove just in case you have a problem with getting a fire started.

Carrying A Bowie Knife In Public

Posted in Sports on June 16th, 2010 by Dylan Sabot – Be the first to comment

If you’ve just purchased a Bowie knife, you’re probably wondering whether you can carry it on your person. After all, these are striking knives – their rugged, timeless appearance would add a considerable amount to any outfit. However, the answer to whether or not you can carry a Bowie knife on you is “it depends.” Every state in the US has different laws governing the carrying of weapons, both concealed and unconcealed on your person. For instance, in the state of California, it is completely legal to carry a Bowie knife (fixed blade only) in a sheath on your person. However, Texas specifically states that Bowie knives are illegal, unless within your personal vehicle, or used during hunting or some other qualifying activity.

Your first step will be to investigate your state’s particular laws. For instance, in Alaska, you can carry any type of knife concealed or unconcealed, except for automatic knives (there are a few provisions, of course). So, if you live in Alaska, carrying that Bowie knife around on your hip is perfectly fine. However, should you decide to visit Washington DC, you should not carry your knife with you. The nation’s capital does not allow any knives to be carried unless they are folding knives with a blade of 3 inches or less. This includes fixed blade knives, folding knives, dirks, daggers, etc, as well as concealed and unconcealed knives.

The state of Delaware on the other hand, allows the carrying of fixed blade knives such as Bowie knives, dirks and daggers, so long as they are in plain sight. If they are concealed, you must have a permit to carry a concealed weapon. However, Delaware does prohibit the use of balisongs or automatic knives whether concealed or unconcealed.

For most people when they go looking for a good hunting knife the first brand they turn to is Gerber knives. These knives have been used by sportsmen for years with nothing but good feedback on their quality.

Gerber knives have been on the market for about 60 years so the company has a ton of experience in not only making knives but giving customers what they want. They are a valued leader in the hunting industry and not only provide quality knives but other hunting supplies as well.

Some of their more popular models include both the Freeman and the Firestorm. The Freeman model is one of the most commonly used knives the company makes. It comes with a well designed wooden handle and a non-slip grip.

Hunters really like to reduced slipping when they are using the knife in the field to skin their kill, it makes the process go a lot smoother. This model, however, was designed for smaller game killing and it reflects that in it’s low pricing. It does work great as a starter knife though.
