Become A Better MMA Fighter

Posted in Sports on July 19th, 2010 by Connor Smith – 2 Comments

The popularity of MMA has absolutely exploded within the past 5 years. With the help of this, there has also been a massive boost in the number of trained MMA fighters. Presently there are so many unique methods to train nowadays. How positive are you in knowing what you should really do next to become a much better MMA fighter? Before you go to the fitness center for yet another training workout, first consider a glimpse at this list of tips.

1. Don’t target on just strength training! Many MMA fighters need a training routine which consists of absolutely nothing but strength training. Yes it’s nice to be able to have enough upper body strength for a major knockout punch, but what if the fight goes to the floor? You will need to rely on a lot more than merely upper body strength. Train EVERY part of you. Develop your lower body strength, increase your running speed, your hand eye coordination, etc. This might seem like an obvious tip, but you would be surprised how many people don’t follow this tip and spend all of their training time focusing just on getting a better punch.

2. Target on working out in more than just one style. This kind of goes with the first tip. This isn’t boxing, this is Mixed martial arts. There are all varied styles and you need to be prepared for all of them. If you rely typically on boxing skills and you face somebody who is skilled in submissions, you’re going to be in big trouble. Try to have an comprehension of wrestling, judo, leg kicks, etc.

Boxing VS MMA

Posted in Sports on July 5th, 2010 by Josh Barnes – 3 Comments

I am more of a mixed martial arts fan than a boxing fan, but I do enjoy boxing every now and then. For me personally MMA is more exciting purely because there are more ways for a fighter to win the fight. So many times have I seen on forums and websites people arguing over which is the better sport and which fighters are tougher? The truth is toughness comes down to individuals, there are tough boxers just like there are tough MMA fighters. So the question remains; can boxing and mixed martial arts co-exist?

First of all let me address this ridiculous notion that ‘Boxing is dying man!’. No, it most certainly is not! Boxing has been around since around 2000 BC. It is one of the oldest sports in the world and is still one of the biggest sports in the world. Something that’s been around that long does not just die and wither away. Boxing is still more popular than MMA and has thrown up some great fights in recent times.

It has been great to watch a sport like MMA grow from a child that nobody wanted to the spectacle it is today; generating millions of dollars in TV revenue for fighters and Mr White. Mixed martial arts organizations are doing their best to rectify the mistakes made by boxing over the years, of which there are many, but in doing so they have found some new ones themselves. Neither of these sports are perfect, although mixed martial arts is still young and has time to adjust, whereas boxing is pretty much a fully grown adult. And as we all know adults find it more difficult to change.

Jiu Jitsu: Get Better Faster!

Posted in Sports on June 26th, 2010 by Vinicius Draculino Magalhaes – 1 Comment

LEARNING FAST is important for every jiu jitsu student. If you’ve been taking classes for any length of time, you’ll quickly find a deep need to get better faster. You know some moves – a submission, a sweep – and it’s frustrating when you aren’t able to use them on your classmates. You can grapple for hours on end, but it’s not making you progress quickly enough.

Here is the solution, and don’t worry, it is not about mastering a new awesome submission or unbeatable guard that the other jiu jitsu students won’t already know about. In order to progress, you are going to have to train with intention.

As you’ve undoubtedly heard before, if you do not make a plan you will not succeed. So to get better, make a plan, WRITE THE PLAN DOWN, and every day take a step towards reaching that plan. You should not deviate from your plan until your reach your goal. Remember: PUT YOUR PLAN IN WRITING! You must believe me about this!

MMA Training Workouts

Posted in Sports on January 26th, 2010 by Jeremy Tammy – Be the first to comment

I inspire anyone who wants to lose fat, build lean muscle and get into “fighter shape” to start training with their own version of MMA workouts. It is not surprising that MMA fighters all seem to have that lean, ripped, and athletic look, like Brad Pitt in Fight Club.

It’s vital that we learn from these world class sportsmen. If you want to appear like an MMA fighter who’s in glorious shape, you actually have to be in glorious shape yourself. Unfortunately, we can’t cut corners and the only real way to get a ripped MMA body is to put in difficult work via your own MMA-inspired exercise routines.

In my opinion, the ripped Hollywood look is the sole one to go for. Big and cumbersome is going out of fashion. In general, one can see from watching MMA sportsmen compete, that having barely less muscle mass is favorable to an excellent performance. These wrestlers have the perfect blend of power, explosiveness, endurance, and overall athletic ability.

If only strongman competitions were more conventional then bodybuilding then perhaps more mixed martial artists would incorporate better strength and conditioning exercises into their MMA workouts without the need of learning or understanding why.

UFC 85 Flashback: Alves Defeats Hughes In Lopsided Main Event

Posted in Sports on December 3rd, 2009 by Ross Everett – 1 Comment

Thiago Alves dominated the former UFC welterweight champion en route to a 2nd round TKO victory at UFC 83. The main event at UFC 85 in London was somewhat anticlimactic to the fans at the O2 Arena who considered the semifinal matchup between Manchesters Michael Bisping and Jason Day the biggest fight on the card. Bisping actually improved upon his excellent showing against Charles McCarthy at UFC 83 and pummeled Day mercilessly from the top mount position until the fight was stopped.

Hughes didnt make any excuses following his one sided loss, saying simply that hes a good fighter and he got me. The longtime king of the UFCs welterweight division also gave notice that his career as an active fighter was drawing to a close, suggesting that he had one fight left and challenging Matt Serra in what presumably would be his retirement match. Hughes had no answer for Alves from the opening horn, as he was stuffed on several takedown attempts early on. When he did finally get his opponent to the ground he was unable to do much damage. Alves, conversely, scored effectively with his striking including several damaging knee strikes. He also did considerable work on the ground, with an elbow strike opening up a large cut on Hughes forehead. Though he didnt get to his knees a la Georges St. Pierre, Alves did make a plea to Dana White for a title shot. His failure to make weight wont help his cause, however, and judging from the UFC Presidents incredulous smirk in response that opportunity wont be immediately forthcoming.

The end came early in the 2nd round as Hughes was caught coming in by a devastating knee strike. He fell to the canvas in a heap and referee Herb Dean was jumping in to stop the contest before Alves could follow up with any punches.
