Fly fishing is a little different to bait fishing or spinning.

It’s important that you choose the right fly fishing rod, as this is the piece of equipment that is the most crucial to your success.

One of the problems people first have when the take this variation of the sport up, particularly if they have spun or bait fished before, is adjusting to the fact that the more effort you put into the cast is not, unlike the other forms, the determining factor in how much distance is achieved.

Casting a fly line is all about technique. With no weights fitted to the line as in other forms of rod fishing, it is all about using the fky fishing rod in the correct manner to get the line to travel through the air.

The most important part of the cast is what is called the “back cast”, where the line is cast backwards over your shoulder. This “loads” the rod. The great temptation is to cast the line back, and then immediately throw the line forward on the forward cast. This is incorrect.

Taking Business Out Of The Boardroom

Posted in Sports on July 18th, 2010 by Jane O'Shea – Be the first to comment

Getting on to the golf course and out of the boardroom during the business process may feel like a bit of a skive or a jolly away from work, but the benefits of this type of client contact are many and varied.

The most obvious benefit of playing golf with a potential working partner or client is that by joining in it is clear you have a shared interest. This automatically says to them that you are ‘their kind of person’ and that you have things in common, meaning they will be more open to what you have to say-both on and off the course.

Like anything that takes place outside of the office, being on the golf course means people relax and are less guarded, which means they are likely to talk more freely about sensitive subjects such as budget and business needs. Whereas in a sales meeting you may struggle to get answers to these questions, during a round of golf you may get answers without even asking the questions.

Another great bonus to striking deals out on the green is the fact that it is not just your companions who are more relaxed, but you as well. This means you will usually be seen in your best light and are able to see how well you would work with your companions.

Boxing VS MMA

Posted in Sports on July 5th, 2010 by Josh Barnes – 2 Comments

I am more of a mixed martial arts fan than a boxing fan, but I do enjoy boxing every now and then. For me personally MMA is more exciting purely because there are more ways for a fighter to win the fight. So many times have I seen on forums and websites people arguing over which is the better sport and which fighters are tougher? The truth is toughness comes down to individuals, there are tough boxers just like there are tough MMA fighters. So the question remains; can boxing and mixed martial arts co-exist?

First of all let me address this ridiculous notion that ‘Boxing is dying man!’. No, it most certainly is not! Boxing has been around since around 2000 BC. It is one of the oldest sports in the world and is still one of the biggest sports in the world. Something that’s been around that long does not just die and wither away. Boxing is still more popular than MMA and has thrown up some great fights in recent times.

It has been great to watch a sport like MMA grow from a child that nobody wanted to the spectacle it is today; generating millions of dollars in TV revenue for fighters and Mr White. Mixed martial arts organizations are doing their best to rectify the mistakes made by boxing over the years, of which there are many, but in doing so they have found some new ones themselves. Neither of these sports are perfect, although mixed martial arts is still young and has time to adjust, whereas boxing is pretty much a fully grown adult. And as we all know adults find it more difficult to change.

Marathon Training

Posted in Sports on June 9th, 2010 by John Allen – Be the first to comment

If you’re after a marathon running schedule to train for your first ever marathon then it’s important to follow a program that has been designed to work. Most beginner marathon runners have next to no clue how to train for their very first marathon. Many first time marathon runners just go out an run as numerous miles as they are able to in the build-up phase of the marathon. However this leaves them feeling tired and susceptible to getting an injury. A better way to train for the first marathon would be to bolster up your running distance gradually over a couple of months. Most experienced marathon runners follow what is recognized as the 10% rule within the build-up stage of their marathon running program in order to reduce their danger of getting injured.

The 10% rule states you should not improve your total weekly mileage by more than 10% in any given 7 days. For example, just say you’ve managed to build up your complete weekly mileage to 20 miles per week. Then in the following week of the marathon training you ought to aim to complete 22 miles of running training. The main reason for this is that it gives your muscle tissues a chance to recover from the strenuous training sessions throughout the build up stage. Other novice marathon runners who are training for their first marathon also don’t know how they should break up their marathon running sessions. Elite marathoners use a mixture of lengthy marathon training runs, semi-long training runs and shorter marathon running periods. Elite marathoners also make sure that they incorporate relaxation periods into their marathon running program.

The main reason for this is the fact that it enables your muscle tissues the chance to recover following the longer running periods. When running for a marathon, it’s your longer training periods where you will get most of your endurance and stamina marathon training levels from. However, if you just go out and do mile after mile of these lengthy training runs then you’ll not just feel tired and lethargic all through the day but you’ll also be more prone to developing a running injury.
