The city of Xian is located in central northwest China and it is a fascinating city to visit as it is one of the major influences on the development of Chinese culture from ancient times. It also has the exotic benefit of being the eastern terminal of the fabled Silk Road.
“Hua” means flower in Chinese and “shan” is a respectful word given to mountain. The mountain is named so after the appearance of the mountain from a distance. It is one of the five most sacred mountains throughout China and has five different peaks.
The mountain has always been an important place for the Taoist faithful and it is a popular pilgrimage site together with those on a normal Xian travel. People come from all over China to visit the temples there and to complete the heart stopping hike to the northern peak. If you are fainthearted and do not want to brave the trail, then you can take the cable car to the 1613 meter northern peak to enjoy the stunning views.
There are three different trails that go up to the northern peak of the mountain, which stands at 1613 meters. The tallest peak on the mountain is at 2160 meters. The most popular of the routes is the original path and this winds about six kilometers to the top. From the north peak there are other paths that lead to the other peaks.
The path has over time come to be known as the most dangerous hiking trail under heaven and with good reason and there have been several fatalities occur there. Recently the Chinese Government has made improvements to the trail so that it is much safer for people on a Xian travel. You do not need any special mountain climbing equipment, but gloves and a climbing rope are a good idea.
The mountain is considered to be very sacred to Taoism and emperors used to come here to make offerings and pray. There are a number of very important and interesting temples around the mountain. At the south peak there is the Baidi Temple, which is considered the host temple of the Taoist god Shaohao. Right near the base of the mountain is the picturesque Xi Yue Temple, which is one of the oldest in all of China.
